Portrait of Dr. Haustein
By Christian Schad
1928 Madrid

The work of art I had selected is called Portrait of Dr. Haustein. The artwork was created by an artist named Christian Schad in 1928. The painting is a portrait of a Jewish dermatologist who had specialized in venereal diseases. Venereal disease is a disease that is usually transmitted by sexual contact from a different individual who had already been infected by it. In other words, it is an STD. What had caught my attention about this piece specifically, while looking at artworks was the shadow behind Dr. Haustein. The shadow gave off a creepy and eerie vibe. But the man himself looks calm and unbothered while there is a shadow that is not his behind him on the wall.

The JSTOR article I had found is called The Portrait of Dr. Hans Haustein. The article had summarized the background of Haustein himself. For instance, “Haustein was born in Berlin where he also studied medicine and was finally trained as a dermatologist. “He was a leading expert on the epidemiology of venereal diseases…” (Schulthesiss). While researching about the portrait and about Haustein in the article, I had learned that the shadow behind him was most likely a “threatening shadow of his mistress” (Schulthesiss). The mistress appears to be smoking in the shadow behind her. I had not known this initially while just observing the painting. Unfortunately, his wife had committed suicide in 1931.

While viewing the work of art in the virtual tour, I was fascinated by the variety of paintings there were. I had seen many portraits, scenery paintings, and a few pop arts. I was interested in seeing the different types of styles different authors had used. There were some paintings that clearly showed each brush stroke as a painting technique but others used fine lines and shading. Although the painting of Dr. Hautstein had caught my attention the most, viewing so many different styles of paintings in the virtual tour was a very interesting experience because I had witnessed a different painting by Christian Schad and had noticed that his style of art is very consistent. I say this because the way Schad paints people are very similar to one another.
